I would like to add that local zoning ordinances really are an issue with producing local food. In Ferguson Township you need 50 acres to be a farm and in that township that means to have just one chicken you need 50 acres. We need to work at educating our local officials about different types of farms but also let them know that we as residents want to be able to produce at least some of our own food. Perhaps this could just entail making sure we send out invites to our local officials when we have events. I know some of this already happens but perhaps we need to have a representative from every township/borough that makes it a point to extend invitations when events arise.
A lot of the farms that service the State College area come in from other areas. These farms are great but what happens when gas prices go up, so would their prices to cover their costs and that would then create a barrier for lower income families.
